The beavers gathered at a beach in Otaru on the first weekend in July.
Although it was an unusually hot summer day for this time of year in Hokkaido, they enjoyed crab fishing.
夏真っ盛り！な7月第1週の週末
ビーバー隊は小樽の海岸で集合
カニ釣りを楽しみました。
Are there any crabs at this beach?!’‘How will we catch the crabs?!’
The beavers were at a bit of a loss for what to do at the beginning.
カニはほんとうにいるのかな？！
カニってどうやってとるのかな？！
はじめはなんだか所在のない様子だったビーバー隊のメンバーたち
However, they saw the bigger boys and girls from the Cub group who arrived at the beach a little ahead were rushing out to the sea and eagerly searching for crabs.
ほんの少し先に着いていたカブ隊のお兄ちゃん・お姉ちゃんたちは、
あっという間に海岸に飛び出し、どんどん歩き回って積極的にカニを探してる！
The beavers were encouraged to do the same and went into the sea with nets and crab fishing tools in their hands.
そんな様子に気持ちも誘われてか、
手には網やカニ釣り竿を持ち、ビーバー隊も海の中へ。
‘There are no crabs here! The crabs are over there!’
「ここにはいないよ！あそこにいるよ！」
I could hear such conversations from here and there and see that everybody was exchanging information and cooperating with each other.
By lunch time, everyone had finished their crab fishing mission.
あちこちでそんな声が飛び交い、
情報交換・協力をしながら
お昼を迎える頃には全員カニ釣り成功！
On the way back to the parking lot from the beach, everyone picked up rubbish on the beach where they had enjoyed the crab fishing.
カニ釣りを楽しませてもらった海岸で、
駐車場までの帰り道はみんなでゴミ拾い。
One of the beavers was holding a huge piece of styrofoam which was about half his size.
He said proudly ‘Look! I picked such a huge piece of rubbish’. I felt that he was reliable for his age but I wished that by the time he becomes a man there will longer be any need to do rubbish collection at the beach.
身体の半分くらいもあるような発泡スチロールの板まで拾って
「でかいゴミ拾った！！」と、誇らしげなビーバー隊メンバーの様子は頼もしかったですが、この子たちが大人になる頃には、
海岸のゴミも無くなっている世の中だといいなぁ。と思いました。
After the sea activity, we had a mountain activity.
海の活動後は、山の活動！
We moved onto ‘Otaru nature village’ which is located on a nearby mountain.
The beavers played in the playground under the sunlight filtering through the trees.
小樽自然の村へ移動し、
山の木々の木漏れ日の下で思いっきり遊具で遊び、
Then they made ice cream.
最後は手作りアイスをみんなで作り
They had a happy snack time in a shady spot.
木陰の下で楽しいおやつの時間
It was the perfect sea and mountain day camp for the beavers.
1日で海と山を行き来し、自然の醍醐味を味わった一日でした。
